I accidentally deleted the app from my phone

The app is free to download, so just download it again from the app store. Any reports you have secured or sent can still be accessed online.

Why won’t my report send?

Make sure your phone has a signal or wifi to connect to the Internet. If this doesn't work, try closing the app and reopening it. Otherwise, please contact us by emailing Help@JustEvidence.org and we'll do what we can to sort out the issue promptly.

How does the Video Statement function work?

If you have not made a statement before, swipe through the prompts. Whether your statement is for a legal, insurance or regulatory purposes, the prompts will help you to cover the key issues. If your phone only has a rear-facing camera, you can record yourself or ask a friend to video you. If you are a professional taking a statement from someone else, you can use Capture >Video to video record and validate a witness statement.

How does the Crime Statement function work?

If you are unsure about making your own statement, tell the police and they will help. Otherwise, swipe through the prompts to help prepare the key issues. If your phone only has a rear-facing camera, you can record yourself or ask a friend to video you. Review your statement in a few days - if you need to update it, it's easily done through Video Statement > Supplement. Finally, please do not show your statement to any other witness or publish it more widely before any criminal proceedings are over. If you are a police officer, you can use Capture > Video to record and validate a witness statement.

How does the Supplement function work?

While our recollection is best immediately after the event, sometimes we can recall a significant detail a couple of days later. So please review your statement after a few days. If you then realize you omitted a significant point or left something unnecessarily confused, Video Statement >Supplement allows you to clarify it by following the simple steps. Make sure you keep your original statement. If you do need to use this function, it is best to use it just once.

How does the Review function work?

You can also delete a media file from your phone after viewing it.

How does the Add a Commentary function work?

Add a Commentary to accompany or describe a video or photo you have captured. If you may need or want to use your evidence formally or in court, use the Video Statement function as this will provide better evidence than Add a Commentary. (For this reason, you cannot attach a commentary to a report to the Police.)

Review the media first, prepare your commentary, then record it as you watch the media. When you secure or send your commentary ensure both your voice over and the original file are attached to your report.

Select whether you are a victim or witness, the crime type and, if this was a hate crime, also select the motivation. Next, attach any evidence. (The validation service applies to evidence captured by the Self Evident app and is not available for imported media.)

Then locate the incident on the map, check when it happened and add a brief summary.

A link to your report is emailed to the relevant police team. In much of the UK, this happens automatically. Elsewhere, we can help you get your report to the local police.

Problems Sending Reports

How do I know my report has been received?

You can track when your report was sent and when the recipient accessed it by going to the report in the Reports section of your account.

What if I do not have the credit needed to secure or send a report?

If it’s not a free report (click on the link Free in the footer) and you don’t have sufficient credit to secure or send it, we’ll hold the report as pending for three days and email to tell you. If, by the fourth day, credit hasn’t been added we will delete the report and any evidence from your account. The evidence will remain on your phone.

Why have I been charged double for my report?

The charges for regular reports are based on the report and evidence not exceeding 60MB in size. As most people won’t know the size of the reports they want or need to make, we give practical examples on the Charges link in the footer. If you are ever charged double for a report, it is because it was larger than 60MB.

How do I locate the incident on the app’s map?

This app uses standard smart phone functionality to help you locate the incident. When you find the correct location on the map, hold your finger on the precise location until a pin appears. To confirm the location, tap the green arrow. To change the location, hold your finger down on a different place.

Why hasn’t my report appeared in my account?

Please check that the sending process on the app has completed. If there was a connection failure with the internet you will need to resend it.

Why won’t my report send?

Make sure your phone has a signal or wifi to connect to the Internet. If this doesn't work, try closing the app and reopening it. Otherwise, please contact us by emailing Help@JustEvidence.org and we'll do what we can to sort out the issue promptly.

Why didn’t my report get a response?

The Access Log on your report will show if and when the recipient has accessed it. If they have not, check with the intended recipient in case your email was caught by their spam or junk mail settings and that you have their email addresss correct. If you sent the report to a wrong email address and the email bounced, you will be able to send the report again by opening it in your account.

Deleting

How can I delete evidence from my phone?

Go to Describe > Review, select the item of evidence you want to delete and then touch Delete.

Can I delete a report sent to the Police or Hate Crime Support?

Yes, but only after the recipient has accessed it and downloaded any evidence.

I deleted a report or piece of evidence. Can I get it back?

Before you delete anything, we encourage you to save copies. We may be able to access the evidence if we’ve retained it for validation purposes. If you find yourself in this position, please contact us by emailing Help@JustEvidence.org.
